Every year, MGM Advantage carries out a Retirement Nation survey, asking over 2,000 people about their hopes, fears and financial readiness for retirement.  The results provide a shocking picture of how ill-prepared many people feel about funding a retirement that’s likely to last at least 20 years.

Some of the headlines

• Less than 5% of non retired British adults aged 55 and over feel ‘fully prepared’ for retirement. This is a dramatic drop from 2008, when 39% felt fully prepared

• Over a third (35%) of people aged 65 and over expect to keep working until they are at least 71 years old,  and 9% of this age group plan to be working past their 80th birthday. 

• Only around a third of adults (31%) have built up a savings pot for retirement.

• 57% of adults expect to take more holidays once they have retired but in reality almost a third of retired people have taken less holidays than before they gave up work.

• People in Scotland are the most likely to scale back their daily expenditure during retirement (51%), compared to just 35% of people in the Midlands.
